AUDITION STRUCTURE

Please note that the following are examples only, and may not reflect the actual prompts at audition. Audition prompts will vary substantially between different courses and levels.

Musicianship Skill Test

1.        Pitch. Play back a series of phrases played by the instructor.

2.       Rhythm. Maintain a provided rhythm despite distraction.

3.      Harmony. Answer questions about chords, scales and intervals.

4.      Composition. Perform a composed work, providing sheet music or lyrics as applicable.*

5.      Improvisation. Improvise over a given set of standard harmonies.

6.      Repertoire. Bring a prepared list of studied pieces. Perform excerpts as requested by the instructor.*

7.       Technique. Demonstrate a pleasant sound, good intonation and relaxed technique on your instrument throughout the audition.

8.      Reading. Sight-read a given chart on your instrument.

9.      Ensemble Work. Lead the instructor through a piece from your repertoire, and play it together.*

10.   Performance. Demonstrate comfort and confidence in performance throughout.

12.    Discuss your interest in and knowledge of the subject material for a given class/ensemble.
